This could be me and you if the US government allowed disabled people to get married without losing their benefits...

Public

Still pretty romantic though. You ever get a good wheelchair hug? My partners tell me they're divine~

Quiet public

@literalgrill I firmly believe you can lift a person & their chair like this

Quiet public

@yeenbean If the breaks are on, I legitimately think I could if the weight is right...

Public

@literalgrill@sakurajima.moe Some friends of mine married several years ago when being married was better for disability benefits. Then they changed things and now they're worse off, living below the poverty line. Both of them are 100% disabled. Truly fucked up.

Public

@reina @literalgrill It shouldn't matter either way. They need to stop trying to nudge people and manipulate their behavior.

Quiet public

@literalgrill Tying things like healthcare to marriage is unethical imho.

(I don’t think marriage should have any legal meaning and that everyone should be covered when it comes to healthcare, UBI, etc. A society is as good as it takes care of its weakest member.)

@literalgrill

first trick will be convincing the government that they don't have exclusive right to screw us all...

@literalgrill
oh nah, corpos have that right too. that's why they keep spending so much money to tell the government to keep it that way.

@LeBonk @literalgrill

one could make a case for the venn diagram of large corporate interests and government actions is a single circle.

@literalgrill
I saw that movie. It starred Jane Fonda & Jon Voight IIRC.

@literalgrill
same in Germany, unfortunately.

Public

@literalgrill Love the photo!

I'm curious what you mean about losing benefits. Do you mean when two disabled people get married, because I don't recall losing any benefits when I married my spouse who is not disabled? It does absolutely suck that the government taxes Social Security income.

Public

@marcfranz8 This doesn't always happen, but many times marriage ends up putting someone into a bracket of making "too much money" to get the benefits they need. There are other ways the government sometimes uses this to take folks off of disability too so they have no income or insurance.

It is bad enough some folks get divorced on purpose because they need their benefits to live. It's very depressing. Disabled folks still need marriage equality.

Public

@literalgrill @marcfranz8 Yep, especially if an individual is on SSI and/or Medicaid. The total asset (resource) limit is currently $2,000 ($3,000 if married) and that hasn't changed since 1989.

It's a de-facto marriage ban and sadly, there's no plans to change this anytime soon or ever.

Public

@literalgrill Making it detrimental for disabled people to marry is eugenics, pure and simple. It’s not the first time the US pulled this crap.

Public

@literalgrill the more I learn about the hurdles people with disabilities face in this country the more infuriating it is. I didn't know that specific gotcha. Cheers for your great sense of humor, and TIL

Public

@literalgrill they do what? Isn’t that called euthanasia?
