Does anybody really use video calls that much, or is it just something I see in movies?

¿Alguien podría pasarme algún post o artículo que explique para humanos lo que es XMPP?
Es para un amigo.
If you'd love to host your own services #mastodon #peertube #email #xmpp #nextcloud but don't necessarily have the technical skills, but you're willing to try.
You've got to check out #yunohost !!!
It's an amazing platform, that is made for non IT experts to install many #seflhost ed services with just a few clicks.
They even provide you with a free subdomain to get you started.
I urge you to checkout their new awesome website, you won't regret it!

It is pretty cool that #Conversations_im sales have been paying my rent for the last 10 years.
Not everything needs to be a subscription.
I wrote a blog post on setting up #Prosody #XMPP server on #Debian 12, Bookworm.
Most people should probably just stick with #Snikket, but for those who would prefer to go the manual setup route hopefully this will be of interest or help.

I'd be curious to know how that works with...
#TOR nodes?
#i2p
#Restroshare
#SecureDrop
#IRC
#xmpp
#matrix

Over a year ago, I wrote ”A month using XMPP (using Snikket) for every call and chat”.
For something like 15 months now, Sandra and I have used XMPP via @snikket_im for probably 99.9% of our calls, messages, and video chats, running on an Intel NUC.
We both use the Snikket mobile app, and I also use @dino and @profanity in Linux.
Perhaps a fun holiday / weekend project, if you want family-friendly, self-hosted, #E2EE communications?

You can start your own E2EE messaging server very easily and cheaply via @snikket_im, they are trying to make XMPP more user-friendly and easy to set up:
XMPP (also often called Jabber) is a long-established open messaging standard, like the Fediverse but for messaging. Just like on the Fediverse, people on one XMPP server can talk to people on other XMPP servers.
If you just want to sign up without making a server, try https://joinjabber.org
"It is important to be able to communicate freely", says Jérôme Poisson aka @Goffi in the NGI0 #podcast. He is the main developer of Libervia, a communication ecosystem based on #XMPP.
XMPP is mostly known for chat but Libervia offers many more features such as blogs, fora, events & file sharing. It has gateways to other open protocols like #ActivityPub & email. He talks about Libervia, the political side of technology & offers advise about #NGI0 grants.

Und selbst für Friendica, die ja nativ mit Bluesky sprechen und interagieren können, wäre es im Schaubild eher etwas wie mit Diaspora
The solution is the same as ever -
1. Onboard people to free platforms like #XMPP and the #Fediverse
2. Increase the value you create (e.g. posts, replies, interactions, etc) on free platforms, and decrease it on abusive platforms.
3. Get others to do the same.
4/
The #Fediverse may end up suffering from what #XMPP is going through.
Better-funded (but enshittification-prone) platforms (like #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Discord, #Matrix, and #Bluesky) can swoop in, provide better marketing and faster development. A critical mass of people moves there.
Suddenly, you're socially pressured into using them. They become a necessity to find work, to organize communities, to buy and sell stuff, to apply for government programs...hell, to even book Metro tickets.

Today, I invite you to the crazy place that is the XMPP Railway Yard!
This #Jabber / #XMPP channel has a wide variety of people from all over the world, from #train geeks to #FuckCars fanatics to everyday folks who just think trains are cool.

As before, if you're new to XMPP, this guide has everything you need to get started.

I'm proposing we start using #XMS (eXtensible Messaging System) as a shorter version of #XMPP. This would be easier to remember as similar to SMS/MMS. What do you think about it?
