LRT: I haven't been able to take a deeper look as I'd like into the whole Wordpress debacle...I truly feel like comics people are gonna be the last to figure out how to move from Wordpress, if we all decide to. As always lmao.
A lot of webcomics functionally nowadays cannot work without Wordpress, due to the amount of pages or customization involved in modern webcomics. Rarebit is very useful but due to its setup of using Javascript to update, it becomes...unwieldy if you're trying to change *to* it, as opposed to having used it from the beginning.
That said, it would be great if more alternatives like Rarebit popped up. (https://rarebit.neocities.org/) I remember when there were healthy options for non Wordpress lovers alongside Wordpress, but the ones whose sites are still up with the last update being almost 10-15 years ago only work so much, unfortunately. Heck, even right now, I'm trying to remember one that was really good, but just wasn't optimized for current systems, so I had to let it go as a good option for my current setup. Grawlix was also fine, but personally I have/had mixed feelings about it lol.
My pal Eyre @eyre has her Hypothetical CMS, but it's definitely for more "experimental" comics https://pmfg.eyre.xyz/read/#/
And it has to be something like Rarebit or Hypothetical where it only depends on coding and using your own server, since comic_git, for example, is another good option but it requires Github pages to work. What happens if Github goes down? https://ryanvilbrandt.github.io/comic_git/
edit: thanks to @/scumsuck@blorbo.social for letting me know comic_git is a static site generator, which means you can have your own copy on your computer and update it on your site without having to depend on github! Phew!
Hmm just now, I googled webcomic cms to try to find the one I wanted to remember and found three new ones? I'll link them, I might have to test these myself eventually, in the long and away future lol
There are also
rarebit.neocities.org
github.com/Ayemae/Grawl... (fork)
and github.com/mrencyc/Comi... (fork)
but honestly..... I don't wanna *blog* without WordPress...... they better kick out Matt or whatever his name is. I do not want to make a static blog tbh
Rarebit | HTML Webcomic Templa... [rarebit.neocities.org]
@hikatamika.com Yup! I mentioned Rarebit and Grawlix in my OP, but I didn't know about the Grawlix fork or the CC fork! Neato \ o / Moar links for the to do list LMAO
(me asking myself rn if I have a CMS corner in my website section for resources lmao)
LMAOOOOO well, for my fansite and Aradia, I just used sadgirl's way of putting a dreamwidth blog "through" the website. Basically, pops up like a blog of the site if you didn't know any better! (Although to answer, of course, it'll take you to dreamwidth but dreamwidth allows Anon comments because it's a LJ fork!)
https://web.archive.org/web/20220523141426/https://learn.sadgrl.online/the-easiest-way-to-make-a-blog-on-neocities/ (she originally made it for Neocities but later expanded it to all over. archived link because her site gives a 404, woe is us ;-; )
I was about to link you my examples but now neither of my blogs pop up on them. Cool. Good thing I was thinking of a rehaul for Aradia lmao: https://aradiacollective.com/blog and https://hollenreiter.neocities.org/thoughts Another thing to add to the to do list!
@hikatamika.com Also, Matt himself, at least according to some lawyers? has actually committed crimes with a bunch of his actions, so if the fed gov doesn't stop him, nothing will. Because he's still in charge of Tumblr and Automattic and they haven't booted him out
(Maybe Wordpress will have the fists of steel needed....)
