Folks, if you haven't bridged and you comment on my stuff, I literally will not see it on Fedi unless I put the link of my bridged account in the web bar and check my posts I don't have a Bsky account, I can't login and reply! It's bridged from my Fedi on the wonderful Sakurajima instance.
I don't wanna be mean but I can't handle how many times I've said it and it hasn't gotten through to folks. My bridged handle literally even isn't "bsky.social", and my announcements elsewhere have said it...
It's right here!!! https://fed.brid.gy/docs#bluesky-get-started It's easy! FOLLOW THE DARN ACCOUNT!!!!!!!! Bam donezo, I see you, you see me!
I really hate ignoring people's replies Maybe that guy shoulda made this auto opt-in in the first place like he wanted, we wouldn't have this hassle.
@naan It's so frustrating he got bullied into making it opt-in. Even with a super simple opt-in mechanism, so few people can be bothered to do it. Only about 20 of the people I follow on BlueSky are bridged despite me regularly spreading the word about it
@VamptVo For sure! Like, I understand the worry about privacy, especially if on Mastodon you escaped places like Twitter and are on heightened alert as a result. (I dare say I think on Bluesky, there are similar people.)
Heck, we're seeing companies opt-in automatically to things that are actually not useful to us, like AI. I had to close my Photobucket of almost 20 years as a result, because the new CEO literally admitted he needed money for the site and auto opted in everyone.
And I understood the problems folks had with not having space for the nobridge hashtag in their bios.
Having said all of that...IDK dude, I feel like we know how to read and tell the difference between "ah this is a bad product that actively harms people" vs "ah this is a product meant to connect us to more people, doesn't seem harmful in the long run." The reaction to the BridgyFed dev should become a pox on folks' conscience, if St Peter doesn't bring it up in the afterlife. (Mind my religious sentence, I'm just still that angry about it.)
This is one reason why Masto as a whole deserves to get its rocks kicked by Bsky, and I prefer Masto much more!
@VamptVo And man, people not being bothered to do it...For so many who complain about being inconvenienced with platforms, it's funny when the easy thing can't be done. I genuinely cannot understand it for people as old or older than me, to be frank. But maybe that's just me.
@naan God, I feel your frustration very much
Indeed, I wish it was auto opt-in, for Bluesky at least...I understand why there was backlash over it, especially in Fediverse. So Fediverse being manual opt-in is fine, but it's really hard to get non-Fedi people to bridge, it's so frustrating. It's hard to get friends to bridge, let alone strangers!
At this point, I don't even know why it's so hard for people to bridge when it's so simple and easy to do. I believe some people just signed up and followed some people in Bluesky for 1-2 days then left, so they didn't get to see the post about bridge, which is...okay, fine. But the rest? I have no idea
I think Bridgy Fed dev still had plans to auto opt-in for Bluesky, but who knows
@hako_aiko Yes! I was telling someone else that while I understand the worry some folk had about privacy issues and all of that--ngl, I agreed with said someone else that maybe the BridgyFed dev should have just done auto opt in and let everyone piss off about it, because the bullying he received was just one major reason why a good chunk of Fedi deserves to get their rocks kicked in the ground.
Like, heck even *I* got pushback in the github thread about the debacle, all because I literally answered ONE question about the bridge, because I found the relevant section, and was accused of supporting a "rapist nazi." Hmm, yes, because totally.
re: auto opt in for Bluesky, it seems that yes, Bsky as a whole (the staff?) has decided to allow the entire platform to be bridged automatically: https://snarfed.org/2024-10-17_ame-snarfed-org-theres-been-this-breta-moe
so you know. I'm sure when Bsky announces it, they will absolutely not have anyone mad at them
(there are folks who've gotten mad when Bsky adds normal features to the site--like DMs lmao)
@naan (Sorry for the late reply! I thought I had replied, turns out not lmao)
> the bullying he received was just one major reason why a good chunk of Fedi deserves to get their rocks kicked in the ground.
FOR REAL. Some discourse here reached ridiculous levels, including this one. There are unfortunate reasons why Fedi isn't mainstream - some ridiculous and unwelcoming, even aggressive residents being one of them.
I'm sorry to hear you had to experience that!
Honestly, I tried my best to ignore that discourse/drama and not look deeper into it back when it happened for my sanity, so I didn't know the details. Turns out it's THAT bad. Yikes. I can't even make sense of it. How can wanting to bridge with Bluesky and wanting auto opt-on (in other words, opt-out) means...that?! What's the logic here?!
> it seems that yes, Bsky as a whole (the staff?) has decided to allow the entire platform to be bridged automatically
Oh yeah, I saw that! I hope it'll come sooner or later. Preferably sooner. Seems like there's some technical issues too, but one can dream. Never lose hope.
There's bound to be some anger, that is only natural but...what?! Angry for DMs?! That's so ridiculous!! Humans are truly magical and ridiculous sometimes. I can't even...
@hako_aiko Unfortunately my sanity took the hit LMAO, but yeah, good on you for not delving deeper into it. I need to learn how to do that... (narrator: no she won't)
As for logic, it was mainly privacy worries and ideas about consent, whereupon some took the "consent" part too far ("so clearly since you don't care about consent of users, I bet you don't care about consent of your romantic/sexual partners too") Not everyone was unhinged about it, but you know, one or three schmucks ruins the bunch.
AND YEAH IDK. Like, idk, during the invite code era, Bsky had mentioned that they were going to be public, the invites were just so they could keep working on the site gradually until they felt confident the site could manage to hold its own when it became public, whenever that would be.
But then when it DID become public this year, under the announcement post, so many people were mad that it became public and no longer private. Like. Uh. How does someone who never joined READ the things more than its users????
That's one of the things where I don't think Bsky staff deserves that much grief because wtf, I'm sorry your userbase seems allergic to reading your own updates :sob:
@naan I have read somewhere that the developer is thinking about making it opt-out for the BlueSky side only, but I’m not sure when it will happen.
https://snarfed.org/2024-10-17_ame-snarfed-org-theres-been-this-breta-moe
@chikorita157 Interesting! I also must have been using the terms wrong, because I thought "opt in" was agreeing, but it seems like it's "opt out" instead that means to agree?
So many contradictory terms, this is why I didn't study programming lol
If it's opt out, would at least make our lives easier. Almost feels like the Bsky side barely cares x.x
Thanks for the link!
@naan It's probably opt-in because he probably doesn't know how this bridge will handle the pressure, but hopefully it will get switch to opt-out in the future to make it more usable for users on the Fediverse who choose to opt in.
