In a recent anime industry report, about half the industry workers work over 225 monthly hours.
About half of people in the Japanese anime industry said they work over 225 hours per month, highlighting the long working hours compared with other fields, a recent survey by an industry association showed.
The number greatly surpasses the full-time workers' average of 163.5 hours in the health ministry's survey for 2023, according to the Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association.
This is simply not sustainable and we know for a long time the working conditions in the Japanese animation industry is just bad.
@chikorita157 Hasn’t it always been this way? I’m not saying I’m in favor of it (32h/4day work weeks now!), but I’m not even a tiny bit surprised.
A lot of the world’s workers work in bad conditions, works very long hours, and for very little money. :(
@yon It's not worth rehashing what I covered, but I written about this in the past, but not much seem to have changed, maybe the animators earning a little more, but the working conditions are still bad.

It's easy to see why there might be a shortage of workers. Young people no matter how much passion they have to work in the animation industry, but for that little money and long hours, there aren’t many takers, unless they change course.
@chikorita157 I see 2015, but my brain went “since Disney started in the 1920s”… not that the animation/showbiz industry is at all unique. Same with so many other ones.
One thing I think has changed is that there are more artistic outlets these days. VTuber models (I mean it’s not big, but it is), game artists, self publishing, “creator”, etc. A lot more going on basically.
But it all boils down to greed and exploitation in the end:(
