@chikorita157 MS 365 is Misery as a Service.

@breadbin Agreed, but I still have to use it because of compatability and work.

(Also, Microsoft Outlook keeps bugging me to use the new interface on Mac, which is a lot worse. I switched to it since Mail.app became buggy mess)

@chikorita157 Work yes, sadly I need to deal with it. Can’t say a single good thing about Outlook nor Teams.

Privately I’ve been able to fully stay away from it for a long time.

@breadbin I hate Teams! Work makes me use it and it makes my work computer fans sound like a airplane.

@chikorita157 The whole app is just through and through dumb. Worst communication software I’ve ever used. :(

Kinda miss the old talk utility from Unix and Unix like systems. I wonder if it’s still around. Text based, two people, and you could see the other person type :)

@breadbin or going back to using IRC. :)

@chikorita157 Did IRC and I think I’m happier leaving it behind me:)

But a good, simple, modern open source chat type software would be a nice thing for sure.

@breadbin XMPP exists, but apparently nobody uses it anymore. Also, Matrix is too complicated to use.

I don’t like how everything is going to Discord, even things that shouldn’t be like information repositories (forums/wikis). It’s a bleak future, especially when things like forums, blogs, and wikis can be hosted on the cheap or even for free.

@chikorita157 Discord is like sharded IRC.

Said it before, there are no grand unified social media, no one software the rule them all. I fully think we need more specialized solutions rather than “add search” or “add search with fancy output, a.k.a. AI”.

Then we need to get them to play together in a *sensible* way.

Still think identity should be connected to any app at all, but be it’s own thing.

@breadbin The thing is, Mastodon just added improved (opt-in) full text search recently, so it’s at least way ahead in terms of stability and features compared to something like... BlueSky.

Why BlueSky, I tried setting up one of those test PDS servers and it's very barebones. I see absolutely no appeal to it, especially the moderation issues and hate speech on the platform. Also, isn't it run by Jack Dorsey, the same guy who agrees with Elon in getting rid of blocks.

Seriously??? :kanafacepalm:

I do want to see more anime blogger folks and mutuals here, but it's kind of hard to convince them to make the switch, and it makes me sad.

@chikorita157 It’s frustrating how ok people are with such terrible things if it doesn’t affect them. For whatever issues the fediverse has, not being ran by a bunch of rich fascists is a big plus.

Personally I see no upside to search. Nothing I want to find, and I can’t find a reason why anyone would ever want to find me or what I write via search. But it seems people use it a lot.

@breadbin I know search gets used for harassment (although it might be less of an issue since the user needs to opt-in), but at the same time, I think it’s necessary since Japanese artists in particular tend not to use hashtags at all, which makes content discovery difficult.

Anything that can attract users away from Twitter, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky is a plus.

@chikorita157 There has to be better ways to do discovery than randomly sift through all the data and apply some black voodoo magic algorithms.

Basically I think there are better solutions than search for a lot of stuff. I get wanting to see content, but microblogging is person centric, so it’s a conceptual fail from day 1.

Imho, I have my idea of what I wish SM could be :)
