An interesting item popped up on Goodwill's auction site: a 3.5-inch #floppy drive for an electronic #knitting machine.

I have no need for this, but I love the intersection between #Retrocomputing and #Textiles.
For my Apple IIgs, I usually use a FloppyEmu (https://www.bigmessowires.com/floppy-emu/). It works, and it works well. But, it has the limitation that it can't emulate different drive types simultaneously. It can give me SmartPort hard drives, and it can give me 3.5-inch drives and 5.25-inch drives, but it can't do more than one at a time. And some software, such as PrintShop, will give an error message if there's no 3.5-inch drive connected to the computer.

San Francisco to pay $212 million to end reliance on 5.25-inch #floppy disks
"Muni #Metro also plans to ditch super-slow loop cable communication system...The Muni Metro’s Automatic Train Control System (#ATCS) has required 5¼-inch floppy disks since 1998, when it was installed at San Francisco’s Market Street #subway station."

morning musings: I love #betadisk the de-facto standard #floppy #disk #controller for the #ZXSpectrum - it really takes the little #rubber #key #box to another dimension ...

Hello #digipres, #floppy enthusiasts, and others working with #floppydisks. You can now use an #ApplesauceFDC from a Windows or Linux machine, courtesy of #fluxengine. (I've tested it on my Linux machine, and it works- the FluxEngine software is nice, and also handles the FluxEngine hardware & Greaseweasel if you have those). https://cowlark.com/fluxengine/doc/applesauce.html
Today is the anniversary of the release of the Shugart Minifloppy SA400, the first 5.25" floppy disk drive. August 27, 1976.
@tubetime After seeing this, I hopped on ebay and found one... it just arrived with its boot #floppy, so I dumped it, since I couldn't find any others online: https://archive.org/details/netblazer-pn2-uunet-boot
Seems to be a standard FAT-formatted floppy, at least! Hopefully any credentials still on it are long expired in the past 30 years... the URLs aren't any good (and they seem to predate the Wayback Machine!)
One of the oddities from the old computing world was this #standalone #floppy drive unit.
It spoke RS-232 and was designed to...well, I'm not really sure. I acquired a bunch of them when an employer went out of business, but they've kind of sat on a shelf since then.
I've written a little bit about these TechTran disk drives, check it out.
