Hi Friends. I have many copies of my novel, ANYWHERE BUT SCHUYLKILL!
If you send me $27 via Venmo (@Michael-Dunn-565) and your mailing address, I will send you a signed copy! (Shipping included)
In 1877, twenty Irish coal miners hanged for a terrorist conspiracy that never occurred. Anywhere But Schuylkill is the story of one who escaped, Mike Doyle, a teenager trying to keep his family alive during the worst depression the nation has ever faced. Banks and railroads are going under. Children are dying of hunger. The Reading Railroad has slashed wages and hired Pinkerton spies to infiltrate the miners’ union. And there is a sectarian war between rival gangs. But none of this compares with the threat at home.

When reading medieval medical texts, I was confused but also a tiny bit moved by the meaning dreams had in them!
I knew my witch had some valuable lessons to teach.

Today in Labor History March 18, 1918: U.S. authorities arrested Mexican anarchist Ricardo Flores Magón under the Espionage Act. They charged him with hindering the American war effort and imprisoned him at Leavenworth, where he died under highly suspicious circumstances. The authorities claimed he died of a "heart attack," but Chicano inmates rioted after his death and killed the prison guard who they believed executed him. Magon published the periodical “Regeneracion” with his brother Jesus, and with Licenciado Antonio Horcasitas. The Magonostas later led a revolution in Baja California during the Mexican Revolution. Many American members of the IWW participated. During the uprising, they conquered and held Tijuana for several days. Lowell Blaisdell writes about it in his now hard to find book, “The Desert Revolution,” (1962). Dos Passos references in his “USA Trilogy.”

Today in Labor History March 17, 1968: The U.S. Army Chemical Corps killed over 6,000 sheep while illegally testing a nerve gas agent at the Dugway Proving Ground in Skull Valley, Utah. A 1998 report, the by Air Force Press was the "first documented admission" from the Army that a nerve agent killed the sheep at Skull Valley. The incident inspired Stephen King's novel “The Stand.”

I picked up a research book for my new WIP for the first time in weeks today, and read an entire chapter on Highland naming traditions, nicknames, and proverbs about clans -- with documentation from primary sources.
I tell you truly, I have not had the mental energy to do this since October.
A small amount of work, to be sure ... but I did it.
I got so caught up in writing upcoming Red Pens and Playwriting posts that I nearly forgot to share the one published today!
As I teased in my #ScribesAndMakers post from a few days ago, here is the second half of Toil and Trouble, a short story in which a 1920s witch meets a distressed damsel with movie-star eyes...
(link to part 1 is in the post)
I did plotting for book 2 of my current WIP and no matter how hard I try the dynamic for this couple is so fluffy: 'I want to hold your hand as the entire world spits and curses us' type of vibe. It'll be a while but wow will this be a shift from my typical 'the love interest is also the villain' novels.
Question: Are other authors dragged around by the wills of their characters?

#PennedPossibilities 613 — How do you feel about the world or universe you’ve created within your WIP? Are you satisfied with it thus far?
My world is a reconstruction of the river valleys north of the Korean Peninsula 2,000 years ago, and while I've researched a lot over the years and I like the general vibe of it from the first draft, the world is as rough in its drafting as the story and needs to be filled in with much, much more research and thought.
For now I need to decide where exactly everything is ahead of the first round of rewrites, and have a bunch of maps, scholarly arguments, archaeological findings, and satellite photos of the area from before it was flooded for a dam. Some reconstruction of old place names may help, too.
The task is formidable but also enjoyable because writing #historicalFiction means I don't have to be 100% "correct" (and no one can agree exactly at this point what's correct anyway), just that my creations have to be based on sound research. I look forward to it.

Some things never change.
Or, do they?

#WordWeavers 14. Antagonist POV: Do you want to be perceived as “good?”
Li Chengzhi: "Only my sworn brothers and wife need to know how truly wicked I can be. Everyone else, I'd rather kill while maintaining the image of a righteous junzi and former God of War to the general public."

#WritersCoffeeClub 03/13: Are you mindful of your readers' expectations? How so?
I think I am. I know my writing reads like an 80s bodice ripper with less misogyny and fully utilize a lot of the tropes and vibes from that genre.
At the same time I know that modern readers would classify my novel as dark romance and historical romance so I follow those conventions by making sure I have a HEA, no matter how messed up my MMC is.
#WordWeavers 13: If your MCs were music genres, what genres would they be?
Qin Wuwang/Showshen: 60s Egyptian Arab pop music
Li Chengzhi: Symphonic Metal
They don't live in either of these time periods (they live in 7th century China), but they both have the vibe of these genres.
#PennedPossibilities 612: Has your SC ever snooped in a friend or partner’s house?
Li Chengzhi:....Yes. He views his friends (really sworn brothers), his potential wife and any future children as belonging to him. Meaning there are no such thing as boundaries in his mind. He believes that it is better to know everything through any means necessary rather than to pay heed to something like privacy and societal norms.
