But sources & individuals across the space industry & US govt…said these #layoffs are likely to trigger major delays in getting #spacecraft approved for #launch.
The #FAA, which signs off on rocket payloads, cannot approve a satellite launch requiring a #NOAA license if it hasn’t obtained it.
Their termination, the sources said, threatens to undermine efforts to complete what is essentially an air traffic coordination system for #space, currently operating in a trial phase as growing global demand for crucial #satellite services sharply increases the number of #spacecraft in Earth's #orbit.

So the US 18th SDS provides free data on locations of most satellites. This is wildly important to the health of everyone's satellites: they also will generate alerts if you are a satellite operator who is potentially at risk of colliding with another sat. Sounds basic but it's hard work to predict these things at scale, with volume, with high accuracy, etc.
With the demonstrated willingness to just delete whatever bits of the US gov that Elon feels like, we should consider what a post-18th world looks like. No free collision warnings, no public record of good satellite location info. There are paid-for services that use separate radars, but it would be a disaster for anyone who wanted to assess the state of the space environment free of corporate backing. I know there's only like three of us, but still.

It discovered two Jovian #moons ,Thebe and Metis, as well as five new moons and a new ring called the G-ring around Saturn. Since August 2012 it is the first #spacecraft travelling beyond our #solar system, in the #interstellar #space .Recently, it decided all of a sudden to switch to a different #radio #transmission with #earth ,and nobody knows why.
