awesome: Beastie/Leon McNeill just open sourced their Ultima III colour Macintosh port, all written in Think C!

This is the "Lairware" version that was sold at lairware.com, and received many updates over the years - eventually gaining OS X/Intel 32-bit support. The source appears to be an Xcode project with a mix of think C and cocoa.

great job, Leon!

My switch and/or router is likely way too recent for proper 10BASE-T..

The 3400c has Mac OS 8.6 w/ Open Transport 2.0.3 (never reinstalled the OS from when I got it).

The port on the switch lights up when I try to connect (which is good!) but it can’t get any IP and fails (tried TCP/IP in both in DHCP and manual).

@ctb31 @splorp Awesome find!

And it looks like you don't even need a Newton 2.x device nor Wi-Fi - I found a Newton 1.x compatible version on UNNA- and it works great over LocalTalk as well!

(This photo was taken connected to my AsanteTalk which is feeling better today apparently, the #GlobalTalk zones show up right away)

Got a tighter and chonkier set of O-rings to put in the ribbon feed, but on opening it up this time the ribbon went sproing and poofed up into a huge ball of ribbon 😭

Tried to get it back in as good as I can…

spent the morning cleaning out the laundry/server room so my little globaltalk node can ride again!

this is a Macintosh LC475 running System 7.1 and Apple Internet Router. Below it is a very trusty HP LaserJet 4050TN I rescued from a government surplus warehouse last year and reconditioned it.

It’ll all on a school A/V cart that was bought at the same warehouse 😅

There appears to be a tiny bit of bulge to the battery pack, but nothing of major concern. this will be a candidate for a new battery repack for sure. (do we have a good tutorial/guide on repacking PB160 batteries yet?)

the lcd indeed looks to need rework. the backlight works, but i can see only some corrupted frozen images on it.

i can hear the scsi hdd chittering away, and i can see that someone installed the internal modem upgrade! i’m genuinely surprised at how nice the keyboard and trackball are. in all, $75CAD/$50USD was not bad!

i am very much looking forward to turning it into my marchintosh project #2.

this is my first 68k macintosh notebook ever!

Powerbook 160 owners: any strong opinions on logic board and/or display repair? someone local is selling one for a not-terrible price, and i'm tempted. might make a fun globaltalk machine.

it bongs, but sits at a white/grey screen forever. i assume there is something wrong with the display assembly - either failed caps, a bad driver, or bad ribbon cable.

having never worked on one, i'm not super eager to pick it up unless i'm sure it's fixable. i've read quite a few different PB160 guides, but the list of problems with caps/ribbons are endless.
