Where Woodpeckers Dwell
This is a Golden-fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons) that I observed in Roatan, Honduras. Interestingly, the range of these woodpeckers extends north into central Texas and southern Oklahoma, as well as south into Central America.

Good morning.
19 March 2025
Tomorrow is the first day of spring. Spring will be here when tomorrow is today—hurray.
Lately, I’ve been daydreaming about a new camera—a Canon R5 mirrorless model paired with a Canon 200-800 mm lens. Truth be told, it’s really just the lens I want, but it’s not compatible with my existing cameras, and there are no adapters to make it work. It’s funny how hobbies create the perfect excuse to buy new things. I already own four cameras—not counting my phone or the little Sony camera gathering dust in the upper cabinet of my desk. Let’s be honest, a new camera is far from a necessity.
For my wife, it’s all about sewing and quilting machines. It’s as if certain businesses saw hobbies as untapped gold mines and thought, “I can make money from that.”

Kingbird and Warbler Surprise by Debra Martz
I had been focused on and watching this Couch's Kingbird fly out for an insect and return repeatedly, so I was quite surprised when this Orange-crowned Warbler flew in, too!

Hoopoes are beautiful birds — that can smell of rotten meat.
They do so for a good reason, though, which I reveal in my new post for Beaks & Bones!

"At the time of crucifixion of Jesus, the #magpie was supposed to be the only bird who didn’t comfort or mourn for him and the bird has been linked with bad fortune and negative traits since then."
Fuck yea, the most metal #bird was like 'Nah fam I'm gonna go scavenge up some delicious nuts and fruit for lunch. Peace out' when Jesus was being all dramatic on that cross. Shunning the son of god as he's shedding his mortal coil takes balls. Fucking such a metal bird.

Tiny Titan of the Forest
This morning, I spotted a tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor). I'm not sure how many of these delightful little birds are around during the mornings, but sometimes I see several. Since they are not sexually dimorphic, distinguishing between males and females is something I haven't been able to do.
Tufted titmice are a favorite among a select group of bird enthusiasts. To celebrate these charming creatures, I’ve curated a special collection dedicated entirely to them in my photo gallery. Take a look!
