This same CRT had already underwent surgery on the previous weekend.
It's normally connected to my Mega Drive — which is still PAL (50Hz) and hence didn't trigger any jitter — and the RGB input was very dark.
Other RGB sources with different cables were dark as well. Turns out it was pulling the input signal way down towards ground. Replacing the 82Ω pull-down resistors in the R/G/B lines (while still keeping things under 1V peak-to-peak) did the trick.
OK... so what exactly was wrong with this CRT?
As it's often the case... hard to say. I replaced the main filter capacitor but that wasn't it. Then I replaced a few more capacitors in the low-voltage horizontal drive circuit, but improvements were marginal, if any. I didn't have any 100V+ capacitors so had to stop there.
I'd already messed with the settings in the service menu to no avail but... this time shifting the picture to the left made the jitter go away.
Why?
This weekend the Cloudflare Lisbon office hosted a 24h hackathon organized by high-schoolers called Scrapyard.
A couple of us volunteers thought it would be nice to also bring a hobby project to work on, so I brought one of my small CRTs that was suffering from significant jitter with 60Hz inputs (e.g. PAL60).
It wasn't as straightforward as replacing the main filter capacitor, but I got it working in the end.
@FediFollows @iFixit Awesome! They’ve been a great help in recent years (and I treasure the tool kit I got from them a couple years back). Maybe they can help me with the #repair project I’ve got going on another thread, trying to repair an older Sony 5 disc CD/DVD player that won’t turn on!
We. Love. Modular. Ports.
Did you know that MacBooks have modular USB-C ports? All that Thunderbolt speed goes straight through a small press connector. Impressive!
Better yet, if you break a port, your expensive logic board's safe and sound.
Why doesn't every laptop do this?!

Volunteered at our local repair cafe today. I fixed an RC car and an amplifer, and helped diagnose an LED christmas tree.
Couldn't take pictures of the whole space, but here's my little workstation with my tools. There were 8 volunteers and about twice as many visitors, so it wasn't too stressful.
I definitely plan to volunteer again, once the organizer gets the next date picked out!
Since this is a clear engineering flaw, I called up the manufacturer and after some whining on the phone they were willing to send me a free replacement for the corroded boiler. This one still has some meat left on it, but once it can’t be saved anymore I now have a spare to replace it with. Apparently newer models of this machine use a much more expensive brass part in its place that is compatible with our machine, but I wasn’t willing to fork over 100€ for it.

I did another #repair of our Gaggia Classic espresso machine. The thing is nicely built and works well, but it has a critical engineering flaw: the boiler is made up of two halves, one Aluminium and one stainless steel. The dissimilar metals cause galvanic corrosion of the Aluminium part and it needs to be taken apart and cleaned about once a year. I sanded the partially corroded flange, replaced some corroded screws with stainless steel ones, replaced the flange O-ring and cleaned the thing.

The days of being told that #repair isn't an important part of a garment's life cycle are gone. I hope this will also lead to a change in the way that repair is perceived in our society; as a skilled and valuable #craft that deserves to be invested in and as a powerful environmental and political act.
Repairing Our Clothes
Thanks to the latest WRAP report (Feb 2025) we finally have some statistics about how choosing to #repair our #clothes and buying #SecondHand is having an impact.
A few key points >>>
This shows that we’re placing value on the pieces already in our wardrobes, showing the #BigCompanies that we don’t want to keep replacing items,

Here’s the popped capacitor, now replaced with the new one and the sewing machine is running again. Did a bonus extra repair today too as the washing machine stopped draining (jammed pump). And while looking for the superglue I found this very relevant patch in the kitchen junk drawer. Very successful day of assessment avoidance.
Here we go, the first production version of the Who Dunnit's 3D printed reel. In the end, 7 different prototypes were made, zeroing in on the shape and then the transparent material. Naturally also learned about designing stuff with FreeCAD while doing it.
Seen in this video is the 2 part model, where the hub and wheel part are printed separately so no support is needed. Before this I also quickly tried on the one piece version but didn't put decal on it.
In the end I reused the old decal as it came off in good shape and it seems to stay on the reel just fine.
All in all, this was a fun project that taught me a lot. Next I'll probably go back to tackling the modified Road Show project when I have the extra time.
Any act of repair a gratifying gesture of refusal and subversion these days. A poke in the eye to corporate waste and consumer lassitude.
Feeling like renegade heating engineer Harry Tuttle (Robert De Niro) of ‘Brazil’ right now, having decided: eff no, not into landfill—not yet.
And how fitting: while finishing up, @pluralistic heard on CBC radio discussing DCA & right-to-repair.
